Varicose veins are a common condition affecting millions of people worldwide. In addition to their cosmetic concerns, varicose veins can sometimes lead to discomfort, swelling, and more serious health complications. Thankfully, there are several treatments available, one of the most popular being sclerotherapy. If you’re considering sclerotherapy as a solution to varicose veins, it’s helpful to understand what to expect before, during, and after the procedure.
What is Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive treatment designed to treat varicose veins and smaller spider veins. It involves injecting a special solution (called a sclerosing agent) directly into the affected veins. The solution irritates the lining of the vein, causing it to collapse and eventually be reabsorbed by the body. In most cases, the treated veins fade from view over time, leaving smoother skin and reduced symptoms.
Before the Procedure
Prior to undergoing sclerotherapy, you will have a consultation with your doctor, usually a vascular specialist or dermatologist. During this consultation, your medical history will be reviewed, and your veins will be examined. Your doctor may use ultrasound imaging to assess the size and depth of the veins, which will help determine if sclerotherapy is the most appropriate treatment.
You will also be asked to avoid certain medications and supplements in the days leading up to the treatment. Blood thinners, such as aspirin or ibuprofen, should generally be stopped before the procedure to reduce the risk of bruising or bleeding. You may also be advised to wear comfortable clothing and bring compression stockings with you for after the procedure.
During the Procedure
Sclerotherapy is an outpatient procedure, meaning it’s typically done in a doctor’s office or clinic, and it doesn’t require anesthesia. While the procedure is relatively quick and straightforward, you may feel a mild sting or burning sensation when the sclerosing agent is injected into the veins. The doctor will use a fine needle to inject the solution directly into the targeted veins. You may experience a slight cramping sensation as the veins react to the solution, but most people find the discomfort to be minimal.
The procedure usually lasts between 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the number and size of the veins being treated. Afterward, you doctor may have you walk around for a few minutes to help improve blood circulation. Movement can aid in the effectiveness of the treatment.
After the Procedure
Immediately after sclerotherapy, you may notice some redness, swelling, or bruising at the injection sites. These side effects are common and typically resolve within a few days to a week. In some cases, you might experience slight itching or the formation of small lumps under the skin, but these too are temporary and will subside with time.
To maximize the results of the treatment, your doctor will likely recommend that you wear compression stockings for a few days to help promote the reabsorption of the treated veins. It’s important to follow your doctor’s aftercare instructions, as this can significantly impact the effectiveness of the procedure.
Most patients are able to return to normal activities immediately after sclerotherapy. However, it’s best to avoid strenuous exercise or hot environments like saunas for a few days following treatment. Regular walking helps promote circulation and healing.
Results and Follow-up
You will likely begin to see results within a few weeks, though it may take up to 3-4 months for the full effect to become visible. Some veins may require additional treatment sessions for optimal results. Your doctor will schedule follow-up visits to assess your progress and determine if any further treatments are needed.
